Skunks

I don’t know if it is the time of the year or what but we have had so many dead skunks that have been stinking up the neighborhood more than usual. Even one of our dogs came home last night reeking of skunk, so we had to make a run to the store and buy a ton of tomato juice and give him several baths over and over with the tomato soup until he was de stinked enough to where we would allow him in the house after it was all done and over with. I’m glad to know that the old tomato juice trick really works, but what a mess!

Clever dogs!

Do you ever get the feeling that sometimes pets can out-smart their owners? Every now and then I see a video on YouTube that demonstrates that some pets really CAN out-smart them! For example, this video of a corgi helping another corgi escape from her crate! Since I don’t hear any noise in the background I am wondering if the owner had experienced the dogs escaping while the owner was at work and set up a camera to find out how and why that was happening. There were no comments of explanation. What do you think?

Training my little white doggie

In an earlier post, you might have seen two pictures of my little white doggie, PITA.  He came to live with us a year ago.  He was a stray, wandered into our yard on the coldest day of the year.  He was so small; I thought he was a puppy.  I took pity on the little guy and decided to let him in the house so I could call his owners to come get him.  Long story short, he had no identification on him.  I called all the neighbors, the local animal shelters, the area vets, the police, all the local breeders, and the newspapers.  No one ever claimed him, and so he became a member of our family.

When he came to us, he was not housebroken or obedience trained in any way.  That’s one reason I thought he was a puppy.  Turns out that he was NOT a puppy, he had all his adult teeth!  But, apparently he was kenneled outdoors with other dogs, and never trained.  We found out that he was deaf and partially blind!

That made training the little guy very challenging, since he can’t hear, and can barely see!

So far, we have made great progress in the housebreaking department, and have trained him with hand signals (and treats!) to walk with a leash, come, sit, shake hands (paws) and lie down.  We are working on the fetch, but he only will do it as long as he is interested in playing tug of war with us when he brings the toy back to us.  I’d like to train him to do more tricks, but he is resisting the roll over training.

Movie Night

Hubby has to be out late tonight, so it’s just me and the dogs to cuddle up on the couch and watch a movie. Of course, it’s going to be a chick flick.

I am thinking about watching an oldie but goodie. We picked up a handful of DVDs from the bargain bin at Wal-Mart and I haven’t had the chance to sit down and watch any of them yet. We bought Cocoon and Steel Magnolias and a couple spy things for DH.

The ones I like are the kind of movie that puts DH right to sleep, so tonight is a good time to watch one of them. Hard to choose . . .

Bought some new dog toys

I went grocery shopping yesterday and decided to buy a couple of new dog toys for our dogs.  They have squeakers in them, but are largish in size; they remind me of the stuffed animal toys I had as a kid.  Anyway, I had heard that dogs can see a few colors; they gravitate towards blue, so I bought two blue teddy bear squeaky toys.  When I got home with the groceries and had put all the food away, I gave the toys to the dogs.  What fun they have had playing with the toys!  Our big dog has pretty effectively ripped most of the stuffing out of one already in her desperate attempt to kill the squeaky part.  What a mess!  Now I wish I hadn’t bothered to vacuum yesterday!  I’m going to have to vacuum again tomorrow!
